South Leeds Roundup: Snow, storylines and skateboards

Here’s your regular roundup of what’s making South Leeds tick on other websites, blogs and across Facebook and Twitter.

We start this week in Middleton Woods on Sunday. We couldn’t let the weekend snow go unmentioned and the Friends of Middleton Park have posted this cracking picture.

We’ve reported on the excellent Middleton-based Charlies Angel charity before on South Leeds Life. It’s good to see Hilary Benn MP promoting their work on his blog.

Here’s a typically pithy contribution to the floods debate from The Leeds Citizen, suggesting we should check whether the £190m flood alleviation scheme would have saved us before demanding it be built.

South Leeds Live At Home, the group that organise activities for older people in Beeston and Hunslet have been on the telly. They’ve been advising Emmerdale about a dementia storyline, and were on Calendar News last night. Their newsletter is out too with details of their many events and groups.

Tomorrow (Thursday 21 January) sees the launch of two new exhibitions, Winter Garden and Picture Book, at The Tetley art gallery. The event which runs from 6-8pm is free and there’s no need to book.

There are a couple of interesting posts on the ever-busy Save Our Beeston Facebook group. They’ve been trying to make up a story using just two words from each contributor, it won’t win the Booker Prize, but it looks like fun: there are over 350 entries so far. On a more serious note they are trying to collate crime statistics for the area. Such is the power of social media.

The Craft Café in Beeston spent this morning glass painting, I wonder what they’ll be doing next Wednesday?

Evidence that Policing is a vocation, not a job is provided by two of the Inner South Neighbourhood Policing Team. Off duty PCSOs Marriott and Kirkley spotted and tracked two women suspected of stealing perfume the co-ordinated their arrest with on duty officers. If you need to report something or discuss a problem, don’t forget that they run a contact point at St George’s Centre in Middleton every Saturday morning. h

Pancakes and skateboards? It’s The Works’ Skate Park Pancake Day competition coming up on Tuesday 9 February.

Housing Leeds have organised two more walkabouts in our area. Tomorrow (Thursday 21 January), meet at 10am at the Evangelical Church on Malvern Street, on Friday (22 January) meet at 10am at the Hamara Centre on Tempest Road.

And finally, South Leeds’ favourite mod band The Detail are playing at The Broadway on Dewsbury Road on Saturday 30 January.
