5 WAYS shows its ‘ways’ to recovery from addiction

The Leeds recovery centre, 5 WAYS, will be showcasing its wide range of services at an Open House event on Thursday 30 November. 5 WAYS to Wellbeing @ the Recovery Academy is the Leeds hub for those in recovery from alcohol and drugs.

Helen Mason, Lead Practitioner at 5 WAYS and Jo Byrden, Manager of 5 WAYS

During the Open House, workers will be highlighting the work they do to support the Leeds recovery community which includes guitar lessons, yoga, structured groups, IT skills, a gardening group plus support in getting people into work, education and training.

Jo Byrden, Manager of 5 WAYS, said:

“We are open to anyone in recovery in Leeds. We have over 200 members and we would love to see even more people coming through the door for support and to develop themselves. It’s also an opportunity for people to get peer support, so people in recovery don’t have to feel isolated or alone”.

Jo continued: “We have had a really successful year so far. There are so many positive stories; service users completing a construction industry course to gain Construction Skills Certification and moving into employment.

“We’ve had two very popular open mic events. Some people are undertaking the CERTA Health and Social Care course and will get Level 2 accredited certificates. Plus the everyday popular activities like our crafts groups and our allotment and flourishing”

Jo added: “We would also like to see family and friends of those in recovery too. That’s what our Open House day is all about: come in, try something it’s here and it’s all free.”

For Open House, 5 WAYS will be running taster sessions for a number of activities including arts and crafts, music production and guitar lessons. Jo Byrden and some of the current members of 5 WAYS will be presenting an overview of how 5 WAYS helps people to maintain abstinence and visitors will be able to sit in on a sustained recovery group meeting.

5 WAYS works with a number of expert partners to deliver its courses and activities such as the Swarthmore Education Centre, the Cardigan Centre, St Annes Community Services and Hyde Park Source some of whom will be at the event to discuss their range of programmes.

The Open House event will run from 10:30am-3pm on Thursday 30 November at 5 WAYS to Wellbeing @ the Recovery Academy, 43 Westfield Rd, off Burley Road (next to Rosebank Primary School) LS3 1DG.
