The Venus supermarket in Domestic Street, Holbeck, where the old Kwiksave once was, is well stocked and worth a visit. Sadly it seems to be underused, despite the staff being really friendly. There's a good supply of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as staples like baked beans, milk and so on, and a good cafe/takeaway. Too many people rule themselves out of even going through the doors, thinking that there won't be anything there for them, without even taking a look. With this attitude, it's not surprising that new shops don't come into the area. It's not only retailers who need to change their attitude.

I agree that its now less about feeling a necessary, historic loyalty to often failing /drab local shops & more about encouraging them to meet evolving customer needs & expectations including recognising the changing cultural make-up of communities. Guess there's plenty of fish & chips opportunities in LS10 but few places to buy cassava ! Hopefully soon the big boys of Asda & Aldi will be setting up in Middleton but not I hope at the expense of some potentially creative & responsive small business set ups
Definitely food for thought to feed into http://www.leeds.gov.uk/residents/Pages/Middleton-and-Belle-Isle-Neighbourhood-Framework.aspx

Is this what you were thinking of Sithembile ? http://www.fomp.co.uk/html/about-park.htm#map Maybe be possible to get a more detailed orienteering map too via http://www.aire.org.uk/events/archiveresults/2012/2012-01-08_MiddletonPark/Event_home.htm

Perhaps issue of more bins in the park one to ask Cllr Groves this week though reckon power is in listening numbers, exercised smartly..Ps know of http://www.fixmystreet.com ?

Agree about road humps, Dennis, but doubt signs will be sufficient. I think there is a need for enforcement. In my view there is a role here for volunteers subject to proper scrutiny, recruitment and training.

We don't want a bunch of vigilantes on the streets but think pilot schemes using local volunteers to help with stuff like this and environmental improvements (managing litter dropping and dog fouling) is worth considering.

Hi good news about the 20 zone expect it to include all streets west of Domestic Street .
We don't want road humps vehicles in this area are damaged enough by the poor road surfaces
Signs should be sufficient

Thanks for your comments, John and Richard - appreciated.

A few years ago the Council tried to sell off its courses and could only get a buyer for the course at Rothwell which became part of the Oulton Hall hotel. One of the problems is that there are currently too many golf courses chasing too small a market so the private sector is (very) unlikely to be interested.

I don't think there's any chance of it becoming housing because it would not get planning permission. Half of the course - the old part - is on land owned by Wade's Charity ,which exists to promote public open space.

My own view - for what it's worth - is that the course is not properly marketed and with a few changes and a more commercial attitude plus some continued subsidy from the Council - t least in the short term - it could become viable.

I have some questions on how the Council does its sums regarding the course. If it ceases to be a golf course it will still incur some costs maintaining it as parkland - it's suggested option - but it will have no income whatsoever as it will sacrifice all the golf course income...

Thanks John, Richard & Ian for your input..

I was going by what's already in print re the Tesco (old lane) going to be an express.

Again I understood that the old co-op would have to come down, prior to building of Asda.
The old co-op building (vehicle repairs) will this still stand, John when the supermarket gets the go ahead?

I agree John, that Tesco should re apply planning permission. I would rather Tesco be in Middleton, than Asda.

I cant believe planning permission was given to Asda without including thought to road access to the Council waste site. So many jobs were promised and years on there's nothing.

I would rather have seen some redevelopment / refurbishment of the Middleton Shopping Centre. The carpark is full of potholes, the lighting at night is awful and the access road is a nightmare - not to mention the danger to pedestrians who have no proper path.

I'd also like to know if /what Asda is giving to the local area? They'll be making a tidy sum out of the area when the supermarket is built.
