My Life in South Leeds: Strumming in South Leeds

This week we will be running five My Life in South Leeds stories from young women who are part of the Shine Project.

My Life in SL

Hi my name is Millie I am 13 years old and I want to talk about my school and how I came to play the guitar.

The Guitar: I have always been interested in bands and how music is made. I have now been playing the acoustic guitar for about 6 weeks. I am not very good yet but it is something to do when I’m bored and I really enjoy it! The type of music I like is pop punk and the bands I like are: All Time Low, Sleeping with Sirens, Bring Me Over The Horizon and Madness. My favorite songs to play at the moment are Ed Sheeran ‘Sing’ and All Time Low, ‘Remembering Sunday’.

Millie guitarI go to Rodillian Academy and there is a group that encourages music in the school, we have over 15 electric and acoustic guitars. Our school is really supportive of people playing musical instruments. If you are interested in playing an instrument at school they do free lessons. Also, every Saturday they do a morning jam group for £5 which is open to everyone, you don’t have to be a student at Rodillian.

Sharing music is really important to me, because it brings people together and helps me to socialise. I would like to encourage more people to take up playing an instrument because if you are interested in music it is a really good way to learn more about it. I play guitar with my teacher and I have learnt a lot about different music tastes and this always gives us lots of talk about.

In the future I would really like to start a band with my friends. If you are interested in learning a music instrument why not enquire about joining the Saturday group or speak to someone about starting lessons.
