Make sure you can vote in the General Election

The Prime Minister this morning called a General Election for Thursday 8 June 2017.

Voters across the UK will elect Members of Parliament in 630 constituencies. LS10 and LS11 fall within the Leeds Central constituency and our current MP is Hilary Benn.

The official timetable has not been published yet, but we expect the deadlines to fall as follows:

  • Deadline for registering to vote: midnight on Monday 22 May 2017
  • Deadline for applying for a postal vote: 5pm, Tuesday 23 May 2017

If you are already registered to vote you do not need to re-register. If you do need to register you must now do this online here: www.electoralcommission.org.uk/

You will need your National Insurance number and the process only takes a few minutes.

You may register to vote if you are:

  • a British citizen
  • an EU citizen resident in the UK
  • a qualifying Commonwealth citizen resident in the UK

South Leeds Life will be publishing information after 11 May about all the candidates in Leeds Central and inviting them to explain why they are standing.
