Shine Project takes on Yorkshire 3 Peaks

Last weekend five ambitious teenage girls, along with staff from The Shine Project and volunteers (and one encouraging boyfriend), set off on what turned out to be a 14 hour walk up and down the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, all to raise money for a volunteering trip to Zambia in August.

The peaks were not the only highs and lows; we had sick, tears, shouting, and protests (and my legs have only just recovered!). But we also had laughter, perseverance, encouragement, and real team spirit. The girls did so well and we hope they’re all as proud of themselves as we are.

As part of our work at The Shine Project, the four girls will be heading out to Zambia at the end of their Summer holidays to volunteer at The Vinjeru School Trust, getting stuck in with things like after school clubs, and helping teach craft and music lessons to the primary aged kids. We wanted the girls we work with to be able to experience a totally different culture to South Leeds, and are so excited to see them take on such a huge challenge; being away from family, with limited Wi-Fi (which apparently is a BIG deal!), strange bugs, and a totally different way of life.

The girls are doing amazingly well at taking on the challenge of fundraising, in the middle of a busy term of exams. The Yorkshire 3 Peaks is no easy venture and we are beyond impressed with the commitment they showed to walk the 24 miles it takes.

At The Shine Project, we work with so many brilliant young people, and these four are an amazing example of some of the girls living in our community. Girls of South Leeds- we’re proud of you!

If you would like to give to our trip you can sponsor us here head to our Facebook page for more info.  And a massive thank you to everyone who’s given time and funds so far, we really are very grateful.
