Skelton pond 2We start this week down at Skelton Grange Environment Centre in Stourton where Toby Roberts tells the story of the creation of the big new dipping pond in a new blog post on their website. Why not go and see the pond on Saturday (4 October) at their Open Day.

Beeston Festival have held their AGM and posted their annual report and accounts on their website.

The HALO project at the Hamara Centre is celebrating its fourth birthday. The project, which works with people with learning disabilities, was holding a ‘HALO Got Talent’ event today to mark the occasion.

Model Mania is coming soon to Middleton Railway. Model boats, trains and cars will fill the Engine House on the weekend of 18 & 19 October.

Do you have views about bus services? Get along to Beeston Community Forum tomorrow night (2 October 2014) where Graham Riley of First Bus and Cllr James Lewis from Metro will be answering questions.

Whilst the Hunslet Hawks take on the promotion challenge with the Championship 1 Grand Final, their community director, Phil Hodgson is taking on his own challenge. Phil, a regular at the Cross Flatts parkrun, will be running the Yorkshire Marathon to raise funds for the Hunslet Rugby Foundation and SITRaN.

Ever wondered how to build a station entrance in a river? New Generation Transport have posted a fascinating time-lapse video of piles being sunk to form the foundations of the new south entrance to the railway station.

There’s great ‘info-graphic’ on Belle Isle TMO’s Facebook page showing the landlord’s performance over the last year. Everything from 402 high security locks replaced to 22,257 website views – very accessible. You can also find out all the courses and events at BITMO’s GATE centre. By the way BITMO won their ballot with 904 Yes votes out of 947 votes cast.

Meanwhile Leeds Federated, who manage about 1,000 homes in South Leeds, have produced their annual report in video format. There are customer stories and even an animation to explain their financial report, all under the banner ‘People Not Property’.

Leeds GATE (Gypsy & Traveller Exchange) have posted a film about their work over the last ten years. They are also currently recruiting for a Community Connector to work with gypsy and traveller young people in Leeds.

Have you got an unwanted Christmas tree? SLATE, famous for stopping unwanted items going to landfill, are looking for trees for their Christmas event at Hillside. They are also after santa and elves outfits.

Middleton Park FC have started a newsletter for their 200+ members. You can download it from their website.

There’s a Race Night at the Falconers Rest in Middleton on Friday 10 October to raise money for Leeds Dynamite cheerleaders to help with the costs of competitions.

There are 87 Commonwealth War Graves in Holbeck Cemetery and the Friends of Holbeck Cemetery always mark Remembrance Day. With the centenary of the start of the First World War they’re changing things a bit this year. The Remembrance Walk will be on Sunday 9 November.

And finally, did you know that as well as Leeds Reads, the Library Service runs a heritage blog called The Secret Library. It has a post about George Corson the municipal architect who designed, amongst other things the original Bewerley Street School in Beeston (or is it Hunslet?).
