Beeston “brothel” seeks alcohol licence

The notorious Winston’s “Health & Leisure” club on Dewsbury Road has submitted an application for a licence to sell alcohol and play recorded music. The application will be considered by the Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee on Tuesday (14 February 2017).

The premises, which have variously been known as Winston’s and Churchill’s, last held a licence in 2006. That licence was revoked within two months after a review brought by West Yorkshire Police. A further application in 2013 was withdrawn after the Police objected outright to its granting.

The Police are once again opposing the licence. In his report the Leeds District Licensing Officer for West Yorkshire Police describes Winston’s as “still operating as a brothel.” Having visited the premises and been shown “massage / treatment” rooms he said “there were a minimal amount of treatment tables present, the majority of furniture in the rooms being beds.”

Ward Councillors have also objected on grounds of public nuisance. Cllr Elizabeth Nash stated that the proposed opening hours of 11pm–5am are “unsuitable” and suggested that 5pm-11pm was more normal for licensed premises.

Details of the Licensing Sub-Committee, papers and reports can be found on the Leeds City Council website here.
