Church flips burgers for football fans

Match Day Burgers 7According to the bible Jesus fed the 5,000 with loaves and fishes and today parishioners at St Mary’s in Beeston are offering burgers to football crowds.

The start of the football season has seen a return of the St Mary’s Match Day Burger stand at the corner of Wesley Street. Leeds United fans making their way down to Elland Road can buy burgers, hot dogs or bacon butties prepared by members of the congregation at St Mary’s church.

Vicar Lindsey Pearson explained:

“It’s a way for the church to connect with the wider community. It’s not a fund raising venture so our burgers are very reasonably priced and we are supporting local business. For example all the meat comes from our local butcher Mark McDonnell.”

Match Day burgers 5Fans certainly seem to appreciate the effort, there was a steady queue of customers on Saturday ahead of the Sheffield Wednesday clash, many of them regular customers.

“It’s a brilliant idea” one fan told us as he headed down to the ground.

The church plan to run the stall ahead of every Saturday home game this season.
